Gas Safety Week 2017

InstaGroup is proud to be supporting Gas Safety Week 2017 from 18-24 September. This is when organisations from all over the UK will be working together to raise awareness of the dangers of poorly maintained gas appliances.

Unsafe gas appliances can be a real risk to life. Whether it’s a faulty boiler or an old cooker, an unchecked appliance can cause a gas leak, a fire or even a devastating explosion. There’s also the danger of potentially lethal carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Unfortunately, tragedies occur every year, and they could happen to anyone. You can see some warning stories about people and homes in your area at www.staygassafe.co.uk

Gas Safety Week is all about taking action to prevent these terrible incidents. We’re glad to add our voice, and to raise awareness that could help people stay safe at home.

Get your appliances checked

As the nights are getting colder and you start to think about switching on your heating, now is the ideal time to check your home is gas safe for winter.

Tips for gas safety:

  • Check your gas appliances for warning signs. If they are not working properly you might see yellow flames instead of blue ones, black marks or stains on or around the appliance, and too much condensation in the room.
  • Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm to alert you that there is carbon monoxide building up in your home.
  • Have all your gas appliances regularly serviced and safety checked every year. Remember that unsafe gas appliances can put you at risk of deadly carbon monoxide poisoning, gas leaks, fires and explosions.
  • If you rent your home, ask for a copy of the landlord’s current Gas Safety Record.
  • Know the signs of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning – headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness.
  • Only ever use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix and service your appliances.
  • Always check the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card thoroughly. Unsafe gas work can be deadly. Make sure the engineer is qualified for the work you need doing. You can find this information on the back of the card.
