You may have heard about ‘free insulation’ or ‘fully-funded’ Loft or Cavity Wall insulation through a government-backed scheme called ECO (the Energy Company Obligation scheme).

ECO grants have been available over the past few years to help people save energy, stay warmer, reduce heating bills and cut carbon emissions. We’ve helped many customers to access funding to help pay for their insulation through ECO.

Who gets ‘free’ home insulation?

ECO grants have changed since their launch in 2013, and the latest ECO scheme is focused on helping the households that need it most.

Free insulation for Loft and Cavity Wall will still be available, but only for people who are living in a property that is owned or rented privately and who are receiving Child Tax Credit and/or any of the other benefits shown here.

Grants under ECO are available for people living in homes that are owned or rented privately, who are on a limited income and receiving benefits including:
Child Tax Credit
Income Support
Working Tax Credit
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
Income-based Job Seeker’s Allowance
State Pension ‘Guarantee’ credit
Universal Credit
Disability Living Allowance
Personal Independence Payment
Attendance Allowance
Carer’s Allowance
Severe Disablement Allowance
Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefits
Ministry of Justice Benefits (administered by Veterans UK)

If you’re on a low income and claiming certain benefits, you can still apply for an ECO grant that would cover the full cost of installing insulation. Find out more about free insulation and the new ECO grants here.

Funding for the ECO scheme

As previously, the ECO scheme is funded by the big energy suppliers – British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, nPower, Scottish Power, SSE, First Utility, Ovo Energy and Co-Operative Energy.

The ECO grants available will cover the cost of improvements such as insulation, with the aim to increase the energy efficiency of homes across the UK.

It’s all part of the energy companies’ commitment to reduce energy waste, cut carbon emissions and warm up the homes of vulnerable people and those on lower incomes.

What can the latest ECO grants cover?

The latest ECO scheme will make more funds available for insulation as an easy and straightforward way to save household energy. There will be less priority on updating home heating systems.

An ECO grant can cover:

  • Fully-funded Loft insulation (including top-ups)
  • Fully-funded Cavity Wall insulation
  • Funding for Solid Wall insulation (both internal and external) in certain circumstances
  • Funding for an efficient new boiler (in certain cases)

You can find out more about what could be covered by ECO funding when you ask us for a no-obligation home energy assessment.

We’re here to help

The new ECO grants will continue to make insulation free or more affordable for the people who would benefit most from lower bills and a warmer home.
